Sometimes the biggest economic development stories aren't flashy tech announcements or billion-dollar projects.
Sometimes they're about rebuilding something that has been part of a community for generations.
That's exactly what's happening in Coushatta.
Following the devastating fire that destroyed much of its operations in 2025, C&C Forest Products has announced plans to invest more than $21 million to rebuild and modernize its sawmill, bringing new jobs, long-term investment, and renewed confidence to Red River Parish and all of Northwest Louisiana.
More Than Just Rebuilding
This isn't simply replacing what was lost.
The company is redesigning the facility with modern equipment and a more efficient layout that will specialize in producing southern yellow pine timbers and specialty lumber.
When complete, the rebuilt mill is expected to be significantly more competitive while increasing production capacity for years to come. Construction is expected to wrap up by the end of 2026, with production beginning in early 2027.
A Major Employment Boost
Perhaps the biggest impact will be felt by local families.
The project is expected to:
Create 77 new direct jobs
Retain 27 existing employees
Generate an estimated 256 additional indirect jobs
Produce a total regional impact of approximately 333 jobs across Northwest Louisiana
Even more encouraging is the quality of those jobs.
The average annual salary is expected to be $65,260, roughly 34% higher than the average wage in Red River Parish.
Why This Matters
Northwest Louisiana has always had deep roots in the timber industry.
Our forests support logging companies, trucking firms, equipment suppliers, mechanics, fuel distributors, landowners, and countless small businesses throughout the region.
When a major sawmill invests in modernization, the benefits extend far beyond the mill gates.
Every log harvested supports local contractors.
Every truckload delivered supports transportation companies.
Every paycheck circulates through restaurants, grocery stores, retailers, and service businesses.
Projects like this strengthen the entire regional economy.
Public and Private Working Together
Louisiana Economic Development partnered with C&C Forest Products to help secure the investment through a package that includes:
LED FastStart workforce development assistance
A $1 million performance-based grant for infrastructure improvements
Eligibility for Louisiana's Quality Jobs Program
Participation in the Industrial Tax Exemption Program (ITEP)
These incentives are designed to encourage companies to invest in Louisiana while creating long-term employment opportunities for local residents.
Looking Ahead
It's easy to focus on economic headlines that center around larger metropolitan areas.
But projects like this remind us that rural communities remain incredibly important to Louisiana's economy.
Coushatta's sawmill has long been an important employer in Red River Parish. Rather than leaving after disaster struck, C&C Forest Products chose to reinvest, rebuild, and modernize.
That's the kind of news every community hopes to hear.
As construction moves forward, Northwest Louisiana will be watching—not just because a sawmill is being rebuilt, but because an important part of the region's economic future is being strengthened.
