1North Adventure Trails: North Louisiana's New Outdoor Destination is Taking Shape

If you've been looking for a new place to hike, mountain bike, trail run, or simply enjoy the outdoors, there's an exciting new destination growing just north of Shreveport.

Located along Highway 1 in Blanchard, just seven miles north of Interstate 49, 1North Adventure Trails is transforming nearly 550 acres into one of the most ambitious outdoor recreation projects in Northwest Louisiana.

And the best part?

Admission is completely free.

A Park Designed for Adventure

The project is a collaborative effort led by the Red River Waterway District, working alongside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Caddo Levee District. Their shared vision is to create a destination that balances outdoor recreation with wildlife conservation.

Even in its early stages, visitors already have access to an impressive trail system.

Current plans include:

  • More than 23 miles of trails

  • Beginner-friendly singletrack

  • Intermediate mountain biking trails

  • Multi-use trails for walking, hiking, and running

  • Approximately 547 acres of natural landscape

The trail network winds through rolling hills, wooded forests, wetlands, and around a central lake, offering scenery that many people don't realize exists just minutes from the Shreveport-Bossier area.

A Work in Progress

While the park is open to the public, organizers are quick to point out that this is only the beginning.

Visitors should expect:

  • Some muddy sections

  • Active construction

  • Ongoing trail improvements

  • New trail additions throughout the year

The first six miles of bike-optimized singletrack are currently under construction, designed specifically for cross-country mountain biking enthusiasts.

In addition, approximately eight miles of multi-use trails are being upgraded with a six-foot-wide compacted gravel surface, making them usable in virtually all weather conditions.

Each visit should reveal something new as the trail system continues to expand.

The Future Lake Will Become the Park's Centerpiece

One feature visitors may notice is the lake, which currently looks a bit different than expected.

The lake was intentionally drained to allow the bottom to dry before excavation begins. This summer, crews plan to deepen the lake, creating a more attractive and functional recreational feature once it refills.

Future plans also call for a 1.25-mile paved walking trail circling the shoreline, offering an accessible route for walkers, joggers, and families.

A Five-Year Vision

The master plan extends well beyond trails.

Over the next several years, 1North Adventure Trails is expected to grow into a regional outdoor recreation hub featuring:

  • A new main entrance

  • Large paved parking area

  • Permanent restrooms

  • Picnic pavilions

  • Scenic overlooks

  • Downhill mountain bike hub

  • All-weather bike launch pad

  • Children's bike skills area

  • Outdoor amphitheater overlooking the lake

  • Food truck spaces

  • Additional trail expansions

If completed as envisioned, the park could become one of the premier outdoor destinations in North Louisiana.

More Than Recreation

What makes this project especially unique is its dual purpose.

Rather than simply building another park, planners intend for the property to preserve wildlife habitat while providing outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

That balance allows people to experience the natural beauty of the area while protecting the ecosystems that make it special.

A Win for Blanchard and Northwest Louisiana

Outdoor recreation has become an increasingly important part of economic development across the country. Quality trail systems attract visitors, support local businesses, improve quality of life, and encourage healthier lifestyles.

For Blanchard and the surrounding communities, 1North Adventure Trails represents another reason for people to explore North Louisiana beyond the city's traditional attractions.

Whether you're an experienced mountain biker looking for flowing singletrack or simply someone who enjoys a peaceful walk through the woods, this project promises something for everyone.

As construction continues over the coming months and years, 1North Adventure Trails is poised to become a destination that showcases the natural beauty of our region while providing outdoor experiences for generations to come.
