Some restaurant news makes you curious. Some makes you hungry.
This one might do both before you finish the headline.
The Cotton Boll Grill has reopened on Fairfield Avenue, with former employees Red McGee and Sarah Yatcko now owning and managing the restaurant. After roughly a year of working toward the purchase and reopening, the two have brought a familiar Shreveport name back into service.
And yes, there is gravy involved.
Familiar faces, a new chapter
According to KSLA’s reporting, an earlier effort to reopen under a management arrangement fell through. McGee and Yatcko kept pursuing the opportunity and eventually bought the restaurant. Their friendship began while working at the Cotton Boll and continued after they left.
There’s something especially satisfying about that kind of small-business story: people who knew a place from the inside deciding to take responsibility for its future.
Owning a restaurant means taking on everything from the food to the bills to whatever decides to break right before breakfast. Familiarity with the kitchen certainly helps. So does having someone beside you who understands why you wanted to do this in the first place.
Let’s discuss the important matter of lunch
McGee told KSLA that returning favorites include meatloaf, smothered pork chops, and biscuits and gravy. The restaurant’s online menu also lists breakfast served all day.
That last part deserves a little appreciation. Some mornings simply get away from you, and breakfast shouldn’t have to suffer because you finally sat down at 11:30.
This is the appeal of a comfort-food restaurant: sometimes you want to try something unfamiliar, and sometimes you want a biscuit and a very dependable answer to “What sounds good?”

A comeback worth supporting
For me, neighborhood restaurants are part of what makes a city feel like home. They give us places to meet, reasons to turn down a familiar street, and something pleasantly uncomplicated to argue about: who makes the best breakfast?
A reopening also gives longtime customers and first-time visitors a chance to share a table in the same story. One person can explain what they always ordered. The other can discover a new favorite.
The Cotton Boll’s next chapter will take customers as well as owners. If you’ve been meaning to return—or have driven past without stopping—this is a good reason to make a breakfast or lunch plan.
Bring someone who remembers it. Bring someone who’s never been.
Then settle the important question: breakfast or lunch?
